Geology/Environmental Geology

Full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position available, ideally starting January 2009 but no later than August 2009.  Teach upper-level and introductory undergraduate courses in the Geology and Environmental Geology Programs.  Scholarly growth, including mentoring of undergraduate research.  Participate in academic service.

Required: Ph.D. in geological sciences completed by the time of appointment.  Evidence of: ability and desire to teach courses in the Geology and Environmental Geology Programs ranging from large-enrollment introductory courses for non-majors to upper-level courses for majors that incorporate field and laboratory components; expertise in a combination of hydrogeology and geophysics; eagerness to serve as research mentor to undergraduates; and effective oral and written communication skills. The Department of Earth Sciences is one of seven departments in the School of Science and Mathematics and is recognized as a flagship of Millersville University. There are nine faculty members (3 Geologists, 4 Meteorologists, 2 Oceanographers), and three support staff. We offer B.S. degree programs in Geology, Meteorology, Ocean Sciences and Coastal Studies, and Earth Sciences Education.  In addition to the traditional GEOL B.S. degree, we offer a B.A. in Earth Sciences with an option in Environmental Geology.  The GEOL program has dedicated laboratory facilities and equipment including a digital networked broadband seismic station, engineering seismograph, 12 gauge and stamper seismic source, proton precision magnetometer, resistivity meter, and surveying total station. In addition, the department has a server cluster for geological modeling, high bandwidth connectivity on Internet 2, Access Grid capabilities, streaming video, and maintains licenses for IDL, Fortran, MatLab, and ArcGIS. With geology, meteorology and ocean sciences housed in same department, rich opportunities exist for cross-disciplinary faculty-student research. Millersville University is a member of the Marine Science Consortium located at Wallops Island, VA where it maintains a 46’ research vessel, laboratories, dining, and housing facilities.  Millersville University is a founding member of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research Academic Affiliates Program and participating institution of the American Geological Institute.

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT
Assistant Professor

Full-time, Tenure-Track Assistant Professor position available beginning August 2009.  Duties include an annual 24-hour teaching load, including mathematics courses for pre-service elementary and secondary teachers and a variety of undergraduate mathematics service courses, scholarly activity, student advisement, curriculum development in mathematics education at both undergraduate and graduate levels, and committee work.  Teaching load will likely include supervision of secondary mathematics student teachers.  Research support is available through release-time grants, on a competitive basis. Salary and benefits are competitive.  Summer teaching opportunities are usually available.

The Department includes 21 full-time and several part-time faculty with a broad spectrum of mathematical specialties, and approximately 270 mathematics majors (of whom approximately 2/3 are secondary mathematics education majors).  B.A. and B.S. degrees are offered in mathematics, as well as B.S.Ed. and M.Ed. degrees in mathematics education.

Required: Doctorate (or completion by time of reappointment to the third year) in mathematics education or in mathematics with a specialization in mathematics education.  Must be broadly trained in mathematics with at least 24 semester hours of graduate level courses in pure or applied mathematics.  Must be familiar with current directions in mathematics education.  Must exhibit evidence of strong commitment to excellence in teaching and continued scholarly activity.  Evidence of teaching effectiveness is a primary consideration.  Candidates must be able to work effectively with professional groups and community groups. The Dean of Science and Mathematics reports to the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and serves as the chief academic officer for the School of Science and Mathematics, providing vision, leadership and advocacy for the School, its programs, and faculty and staff in the departments of Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Sciences, Mathematics, Nursing, and Physics. Special Education Department

Required: ABD in Special Education or related field considered (must have doctorate for eligibility to apply for re-appointment to second year); experience working with school age individuals demonstrating a broad range of disabilities and age levels; successful experience with culturally diverse populations; three years of special education teaching experience in N-12 in public schools; ratings or references indicating satisfactory teaching experience; record of scholarly activity; evidence of successful collaboration with public school personnel and colleagues; teaching demonstration; and successful interview.
Preferred: Completed Ph. D or Ed. D in Special Education or related field. Experience teaching distance learning courses, and willingness to teach summer, evenings and some weekends, and cooperative teaching.

Temporary, Part-time Faculty

Temporary part-time Librarians needed to work in Public Services positions, Technical Services positions or both.  Public Services Librarians will provide library instruction; Technical Services Librarians will do original cataloging for an online system using LC, AACR2 and the OCLC subsystem.  Both will provide Reference Services.  Evening and weekend work expected.

Required:  MLS degree from an ALA-accredited library program; work experience in college or university library; ability to use electronic information resources; successful interview and demonstration of a database search.  In addition, Public Services candidates will be required to present a library instruction lesson; Technical Services candidates will be required to demonstrate ability to use LC, AACR2 and the OCLC cataloguing subsystem.
