A program is being offered by Millersville University security officer Maria Feliciano and Jayme Trogus, wellness and women’s program coordinator. Rape Awareness Defense, or RAD, is open to all female students, faculty and staff members. RAD was developed in 1994 by Robert Pletcher, a university police officer who retired in 2004 after 31 years of service. “The program gives females a sense of empowerment and the ability to defend themselves from would be attackers,” explained Feliciano, who also helps teach these tactics to high school students.
Trogus is working with the Millersville police department on the program, and is also helping with the website and to sign up students. For more information, refer to the RAD website, http://www.rad-systems.com/, which describes the system as a “comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training.”
Four 3-hour classes are offered at Millersville University. For more information contact Feliciano at Maria.Feliciano@millersville.edu.
