Current CDRE Contract & Grant Work
- NSF Grant Funded Study: Cross-Cultural Study of Mass Fatalities Management after the South Asian Tsunami of December 2004.
- NSF Grant Funded Study: Mass Fatalities Management after Hurricane Katrina, U.S. Gulf Coast, 2005.
- Natural Hazards Center, University of Colorado, Quick Response Grant Funded Study: Organizational Response to Hurricane Katrina—What Went Right, Wrong?
- FEMA Higher Education Project Contract: Creation of Streaming Video Micro-Lectures on Behavioral Response to Disaster, will be available (free) from FEMA Higher Education Project web site for use as virtual guest speaker in classes.
- Developing Disaster Education Kit for distribution in schools within the South Central Pennsylvania Homeland Security Consortium school districts.
Current CDRE Publishing
- UnScheduled Events (UE). UE is the official newsletter, published three times a year, of the International Sociological Association's Research Committee on Disasters. The CDRE Director is the current UE editor and the online version is hosted by MU.
- International Journal of Contemporary Disaster Review (CDR). CDR is the new online journal of reviews (websites, CD-ROM materials, distance learning programs as well as the more traditional books and films) which is an official publication (published two times a year) of the ISA RCD. The CDRE Director currently serves as the editor and MU is the host for this online journal.
- International Journal of Mass Emergencies and Disasters (IJMED). IJMED is the traditional print journal of the ISA RCD (25 years). Maureen Fordham, United Kingdom, is the current editor, while the CDRE Director is the new Associate Editor for Online Publication. The ISA RCD has procured its own server housed at MU, the Center Director has assumed responsibility for published the IJMED online with MU as host. All previous and future issues will be available online. The most recent three years of issues will be closed to members only (moving timeline) while all previous issues will be available free to everyone in the world including libraries. Scanning of the journals is currently under way.
Current CDRE Education Program
- EHEM Program. The Environmental Hazards & Emergency Management (EHEM), or "Disaster Studies," minor involves seven MU faculty and the CDRE director serves as the EHEM program coordinator. The first five EHEM minors graduated May 2003.
- Master of Science in Emergency Management. New program for Fall 2007 consisting of a distance learning MS in EM for those, primarily currently holding an emergency management position, seeking advanced education.
Current Active Partnerships
- Disaster Research Center (DRC), University of Delaware. The CDRE is part of a consortium supported by a recently funding NSF grant obtained by the DRC. Research will be subcontracted to members of the consortium which will provide research opportunities for MU students. The directors of both the DRC and the CDRE are currently preparing an NSF grant application as co-principal investigators which, if funded, will provide for research training activities for undergraduates.
- FEMA Internships & Contracts. The CDRE and FEMA (National Training Center, Emmitsburg, Maryland) have developed internships with FEMA and contracted work projects.
- Lancaster County Center for Public Safety Training , developing partnership pursuant to offering EM Certificate.

Partnerships Under Development
- Organization of American States. Center faculty and students will have the opportunity to provide guidance in the development of educational programs on disasters and terrorism for the OAS member states. Conferences will be co-hosted by MU.
- Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction of Canada. The CDRE is currently developing a plan for cross-cultural research with this Canadian Institute. The CDRE is planning on applying for NSF funding to support the proposal.
- Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, Haifa, Israel. The CDRE and the Technion are currently developing a plan for the CDRE to visit Israel pursuant to accessing the Technion disaster and terrorism data base. Collaborative data analysis is planned.
- Pennsylvania Office of Homeland Security, Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, Local Emergency Management Agency Directors within the Commonwealth. The CDRE is pursuing the development of partnerships for research and education activities with each of the above.
Previous Work
- Office of Emergency Preparedness, U.S. Justice Department - Consultant. The CDRE director has served as a consultant, e.g., TOPOFF2 bio-terrorism exercise.
- Early Responders Distance Learning Center (ERDLC), St. Joseph's University. The CDRE Director served as subject matter expert on a series of CD-ROM training activities distributed to the nation's first responders. The work is supported by a Homeland Security grant to the ERDLC and the Center director has a subcontract for his work.
