WRESTLING TEAM COMPETES AT 2008 VIRGINIA DUALS

Jan. 12, 2008 – The Millersville University wrestling team dropped two of three matches at Saturday’s Virginia Duals American College Tourney.  The team fell in its opening match to Apprentice School, 29-27, before recovering to knock off McDaniel College, 32-18.  SUNY Brockport ended the Marauders day with a 22-19 victory over the Heavyweight-less Millersville squad.

The Marauders, plagued in all three matches by a heavyweight forfeit, received stellar performances from Michael Greck (fr. Nazareth/Nazareth), Jarrett Hostetter (jr. Oxford/Oxford) and Steve Funk (sr. Perkasie/Pennridge).  Each of the three was victorious in all three of their matches.

Greck left little doubt in the 141-pound matchups by recording two technical falls (16-0, 20-5) and a major decision (16-5) over his three opponents. 

Hostetter, coming off of a third-place finish at the Shorty Hitchcock Open in the 157-pound weight class, recorded a pin over Austen Damico of the Apprentice School at the 3:45 mark.  He followed the pin with a 16-1 technical fall and 14-7 decision in his final bout.

Funk, at 184, recorded pins in two of his three victories with both coming in the team’s two losses.  Funk’s third victory came over Ryan Dieter of McDaniel College in a close 4-3 decision.

The team will hit the mats again Wednesday, January 23, when they host Shippensburg beginning at 7 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium.
