Research Interest(s):
My research interests focus on the population dynamics and feeding ecology of immature and adult mosquitoes. Current projects involve examining the trophic dynamics and food web relationships of mosquito larvae and other macroinvertebrates in relation to the maintenance and possible transmission of Mycobacterium ulcerans, the causative agent to Buruli Ulcer, a necrotic skin disease that infects people living around the equatorial regions of the world, specifically West Africa, Australia and South America. In addition, I have been working on the role of stormwater management in larval mosquito population dynamics and development of abatement protocols for stormwater BMPs. Other research areas being driven by students in my lab include projects dealing with 1) the community ecology of freshwater sponges and the macroinvertebrates e.g., spongillaflies inhabiting them; 2) technological modifications to identify human blood from maggot crops for criminal investigations; 3) a population study of the crayfish-feeding Queen snake, ( Regina septemvitatta ) and; 4) stream restoration and impacts on macroinvertebrate and fish communities in Lancaster County.
