CHARACTERISTICS OF A GREAT ADVISEE*
1. Understands his/her reasons for going to college.
2. Gets to know Millersville University and its various curriculum
materials. Also gets to know the various rules, policies, or procedures
that pertain to student life at Millersville.
3. Makes an appointment with his/her advisor as soon as possible.
Does not wait until it is time to sign a registration card. Gets to know
his/her advisor as an individual. Develops a relationship beyond simply
signing a registration card.
4. Makes appointments with his/her advisor when possible. Finds out
advisor's office hours and tries to make appointments during those times,
or other times when the advisor is available.
5. Has an agenda when meeting with advisor. Jots down a list of
items he/she would like to discuss, such as scheduling various courses,
situations where more information is needed, or areas where help is
needed.
6. Becomes knowledgeable about all the various services available on
campus. Such services include financial aid, career services, counseling
center, intramurals, extracurricular activities, among others.
7. Thinks about his/her entire academic curriculum, not just the
semester they are registering for. Keeps in mind that a minimum of four
years will be spent working towards some degree. Thus, has an overall
plan to fulfill the various degree requirements as he/she proceeds through
the curriculum. Does not just look at one semester as isolated. Rather,
looks at each semester and the courses chosen, and their relationship to
fulfilling the various requirements needed to graduate.
8. Does not depend on advisor to solve problems, but allows advisor
to steer him/her to an office or University component which can help in
solving the problem.
