CHARACTERISTICS OF A GREAT ADVISER*
1. Is student oriented, tries very hard to be available to students,
and has a schedule that allows students to come meet with him or
her.
2. Does not hurry through advising session, but listens to what the
student says.
3. Makes students feel comfortable through arrangement of the office,
use of sincere eye contact, and attempting to not allow
interruptions.
4. Conducts advising sessions in private and does not allow
colleagues or other students to be present unless necessary.
5. Asks students for their opinion or solicits suggestions about what
to do about the situation or matter at hand.
6. Is not afraid to say, "I don't know," and is willing to help the
student find answers by being knowledgeable about campus resources.
