The Mission

The English Department Mission

Committed to the realization of the University's liberal arts mission, the Millersville University Department of English fosters research, scholarship, and creative endeavors both in the classroom and in the surrounding communities. It offers a comprehensive range of courses for its major, minor, and graduate degree programs as well as for the university's general education curriculum.

Through its diverse course offerings in literature, language, writing, pedagogy, film, and journalism, the department promotes ongoing critical inquiry into the liberal arts by providing students with methods of critical reading, viewing, and thinking; background and training in writing for diverse readers; and opportunities for creating literary, linguistic, rhetorical, and film analysis. Students enrolled in the B.S. Education program also engage in learning the best practices in teaching secondary school English in a curriculum the English Department shares with the School of Education.
