Is Distance Learning Right For Me?

There are a number of factors that you need to take into consideration in order to determine if DL is right for you:

  • You should determine your learning style and self-discipline to make sure that you will be motivated to complete online coursework. Many DL classes are very focused and intense, with much independent work required.
  • You need to find out what kind of time requirement will be expected of you. Some classes may require you to visit campus and meet with faculty or attend videoconferences--while others may be exclusively online.
  • Although there is ample opportunity for faculty-student interaction as well as collaborative group learning, much of the coursework is done independently. Will this independence suit your learning style?

DL programs provide an attractive alternative to people of all ages with busy schedules or limited access to local educational programs. However, DL programs may not be the right choice for everyone! In order to help you become a successful DL student, here are some questions you can ask yourself to determine if this type of education is really the right format for you.

What is Distance Learning? Will I be studying in an isolated environment?

How do I feel about computers?

Do you feel comfortable with technology and computers? Computer literacy is a basic skill that is required before you leap into online learning. You may want to complete some tutorials or other education to develop some basic skills in the following areas:

  • Using a computer, keyboard, and mouse
  • Creating documents in a word processor
  • Sending E-mail

Once you feel comfortable using a computer in order to write out your thoughts, then you will be on the road toward Distance Learning. At Millersville University, we are currently using software called WebCT to deliver your course materials. We do provide an online student tutorial for you to become familiar with this package.

What is my learning style?

Each person has a different preference for how they learn. Some people prefer to work alone, working with the content until they master it at their own pace. Other people need to be face-to-face with their instructor and peers for "traditional" interaction that is available in an on-campus environment. Distance Learning online allows for feedback and support as well as collaboration, but there is often a delay in the response that you receive depending when you are working on your course materials.

You may have already noticed that when you try to learn something there are some methods that are more effective for you than others. For example, you may prefer to learn by:

  • listening to someone talk to you about the information
  • reading about the concepts
  • seeing a demonstration of the concept
  • actively experimenting with your own hands

Learning Style Theory suggests that different people learn in different ways and that it can be helpful to know your own style. Here are some links to explore to learn more about learning styles.

How do I feel about teacher interaction?

Think about whether you are a good independent worker that can ask for help or feedback when you need it. Distance Learning could be an option for you if you don't need daily conversation with your Professor in order to stay motivated, but are comfortable contacting the Professor when you need her. There will be a variety of ways to communicate with the Professor, including e-mail, chat room, bulletin board postings, as well as the telephone. However, you will need to take the initiative to ask questions and to stay involved with the course.

How do I feel about doing schoolwork at home/office?

A successful DL student should have an area to work that is conducive to learning (desk or office). Think about how you feel about working or studying there. Would you be able to effectively focus on your coursework there, or would there be too many interruptions that would be distracting and make it too difficult to concentrate? Do you have access to an adequate computer and an Internet connection in that "study area." If you don't have access to an adequate location, then DL may not be for you. Additionally, if you prefer to get out of the house/office and into a classroom with other students, in order to learn you may want to consider a traditional course.

Can I set my own schedule for homework and schoolwork?

DL is great for people who require a lot of flexibility in their schedule, and enjoy working at their own pace. You will need to monitor your own pace and create & manage your own schedule to complete projects on time. If you need to have a structured schedule (afforded by meeting with the Professor several times a week) in order to stay on task, then DL may not be ideal for you at this time.

How do I feel about communicating in writing (e-mail), using live online chats, or speaking over the phone?

Would you find it exciting to try alternative technologies for communicating with your classmates? Are your written messages clear and easy to understand? If you feel comfortable typing at a PC and reading messages on a computer, then online classes might be a good choice for you! Online courses can actually help you to gain practical writing experience. You will be translating your thoughts and ideas into effective communication that works well for a global audience! People who take online courses also often develop skills in problem solving and time management. DL may not be the right choice for you if you really need to be face-to-face in order to communicate with others.
