MSN - Nursing Education

Overview | Admission Requirements | Curriculum Plan Overview
Course Description | Course Sequencing | Course Prerequisites

NOTE: Nursing education graduates are eligible to sit for the NLNAC certification examination after completion of their degree.

Applicants may either apply to the Masters of Science in Nursing Education or the Certificate in Nursing Education program

This program is designed to prepare the nurse for a position in nursing education. It is targeted for those nurses interested in teaching in diploma, associate and baccalaureate degree programs, as well as staff development positions in hospitals, long-term care facilities, community centers, and other settings.

The program was developed for part-time study for those nurses who find it difficult because of work and family responsibilities to commit to fulltime study. The Nursing Education Core Courses can be web enhanced or taught completely on-line. The Graduate Nursing and Advanced Practice Core Courses are taught in a blended format with some classes conducted on campus and some are taught on-line. Current computer hardware and software are required along with computer literacy and Internet service.

The Nursing Education option has been designed so that students can begin their academic study by taking the Nursing Education Core Courses followed by the Graduate Nursing and the Advanced Nursing Practice Core Courses, if they so choose. This flexibility has been provided for those individuals who are currently in a teaching position and would prefer to enroll in courses that would provide them with the educational experiences that would enhance their current role as a nurse educator.

Some students, based on their State Board of Nursing regulations for nurse educators or their personal preference, may want to complete a nursing course with a clinical focus area. This can be done by enrolling in NURS 515: Advanced Practice Nursing Clinical Internship.

The MSN in Nursing Education Track consists of 35 or 38 credits. The total credits for the certificate in Nursing Education are 12 or 15 credits.

For additional information on courses, please see our Graduate Catalog.
