Second Annual Gifted Institute - "Unlocking Potential: Keys to Programming for Gifted Education"

June 18-22, 2007 (8am-4:30pm) on-campus at Millersville University, Bolger Conference Center/Gordinier Building in Lehr

The Institute uniquely provides classroom teachers, administrators and teachers of the gifted with an understanding of how to identify the unique characteristics and meet the needs of gifted children. The theme for this Institute is planning and evaluating effective programs for gifted students. Topics covered will include: an overview of the philosophical basis for different program models; current descriptions of the types of programs being offered across the United States; and techniques for evaluating the effectiveness of gifted programs. Institute Objectives

By the conclusion of this institute teachers and administrators will become aware of

  • Training and establishment of a template for an effective gifted program that will include writing a philosophy, setting criteria and curriculum offerings
  • An overview of current programming practices for gifted in Pennsylvania and across the United States
  • Introduction to commercial programs available and their approaches
  • Introduction to Pull-in; pull-out and other models for programming
  • Be able to design a draft for a model program that includes criteria for evaluating it's effectiveness.

Institute Information

Credits - All participants will receive 3 graduate credits for the five-day institute, June 18-22, 2007. The credits and grade for the completed institute will not be provided until all post-Institute assignments and lesson plans have been submitted and evaluated. This process is intended to be complete by July 6, 2007.

Requirements -

  • Prior to the start of the Institute students will be provided with a list of required readings that relate to identification, social, emotional needs and differentiation.
  • A written summary of these readings will include key ideas and student application of the information to their own program.
  • Completion of a daily journal on information and impressions of the day.
  • Independent research on a thinking skill program, competition, university programs, or technology program for use in the classroom.
  • A personal course of action paper for improved GIEP preparation and implementation

During the Institute:

  • Participate in all workshop discussions and collaborative exercises
  • Conduct research on different models for effective programming .

After the Institute:

  • Develop a draft for an improved gifted program for use with gifted individuals in their educational setting.
  • Complete an evaluation of the Institute.

Fees - Fee includes all tuition and fees to register for the graduate-level Gifted Institute. All handouts, materials and meals are included. Purchase of the required text (listed above under Requirements section) is the responsibility of the participant. Exact costs are listed on the registration form.

General Information - It is very important to accurately complete the application/registration form. If you have not taken any graduate-level course at Millersville University within the past 5 years, this information is necessary to admit you to the university. Complimentary continental breakfast, buffet luncheon, and afternoon snacks will be provided each day. School District Teams are encouraged to attend the Gifted Institute together. There will be a maximum of 100 participants accepted into the Institute. Registrants will receive confirmation information via email.

Cancellation Policy - Full refund minus $40 nonrefundable fee will be issued if notice of withdrawal is given to the Office of Professional Training and Education by May 1, 2007.
