Perspectives

As residents of Millersville, we live in an area that is relatively developed, both agriculturally and residentially.  Among this development, we have beautiful patches of trees and foliage, as well as a genuine forest (the M.U. Bush.)  It is easy to assume that our actions have no impact on our immediate environment, if any at all.  Keep in mind that all energy conservation, (including but not limited to recycling) is key to preserving not only our healthy green campus, but the welfare of the entire earth.

  • 5 millions homes could be heated for 100 years with the wood and paper thrown away in the U.S. each year
  • A ton of paper made from recycled material saves:
    • 4,100 kwh of energy
      7,000 gallons of water
      60 pounds of air emissions
3.3 cubic yards of landfill space
      17 trees

Last year at Millersville University recycled 193.5 tons of paper
  • The steel cans Americans throw away could completely supply the nation's auto makers
  • Every year america recycles enough cans to completely run an average sized city for an entire year.
  • Every three months, Americans throw away enough aluminum cans to rebuild the entire U.S. commercial air fleet
  • It takes little more than 60 days to recycle an aluminum can, fill it and put it back on the supermarket shelf
  • 85-90% of that aluminum is recycled.
  • Making 1 aluminum can from raw materials requires 19 times more energy than from recycled cans

  • Packaging accounts for almost half of the municipal solid waste in the U.S.
  • Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt light bulb for 4 hours, or to run a television for 3 hours
